What is Orthodox Christianity?
The Orthodox Church is the original Christian Church — the Church founded by Jesus Christ and His Apostles over 2,000 years ago.
The Ancient Faith
Orthodox Christianity has preserved the teachings, worship, and spiritual life of the early Church in an unbroken tradition stretching back to the Day of Pentecost. With over 300 million faithful worldwide, the Orthodox Church is the second-largest Christian communion in the world.
The word “Orthodox” means “right belief” and “right worship.” Orthodox Christians hold to the faith defined by the Seven Ecumenical Councils and expressed in the Nicene Creed — the same faith confessed by Christians for nearly two millennia.
What to Expect at an Orthodox Service
Walking into an Orthodox church for the first time can be a profound experience. You will encounter:
- Icons — Sacred images of Christ, the Theotokos (Mother of God), and the Saints that surround the faithful as a reminder of the heavenly Church
- Chanting and singing — The services are mostly sung, with ancient melodies that have been passed down through the centuries
- Incense — Representing the prayers of the faithful rising to God
- Standing — The traditional posture for Orthodox worship, though seating is available
- The Divine Liturgy — The central act of Orthodox worship, where the faithful receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion
Don’t worry if you feel lost at first — that is perfectly normal. Simply come, observe, and let the beauty of the worship speak to your heart. Everyone is welcome.
